Long Term Evolution (LTE) vs. WiMax Technology

According to the huge effects of broadband internet in the past and also the attainment of mobile phone. So, today the point of broadband is very important that why WIMAX an LTE were interested and argued about the best technology.

Both WIMAX and LTE were 4G technologies which aim to improve the limitations of 3G technology or third generation technology. WIMAX and LTE were officially accepted to be IMT-2000* or (International Mobile Telecommunications of year 2000). WIMAX gains more competitive advantage than LTE because 802.16e was already achieved the standard for a period of time, while the standard of LTE still be in process.
However, these two technologies have the important difference e.g. WIMAX is on the standard of IEEE while LTE was developed on 3GPP. The standard of IEEE is open system more than 3GPP.
The main difference of them is the usage of network; WIMAX required new technology while LTE is evolved from the old one that make LTE gain more competitive advantage because of the exiting users of the old network.
And another important factor is frequency; About half of populations in the world were located in the place that already received the license of using WIMAX such as, TDD 2.3 GHz, 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz.
On the other hand, LTE is more flexible than WIMAX because LTE can be used and set up in any frequencies in the range of 2.1GHz, AWS, 700MHz, 2.6GHz, 900 and 1800MHz. LTE provided more flexibility because of the ability of installing was start from 1.3MHz to 20MHz that lead LTE access to the existing frequencies easily.
IMT-2000* is simply a term used by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to refer to many third generation (3G) wireless technology, that provide higher data speed between mobile phones and base antennas.
Also Known As: IMT2000, IMT stands for "International Mobile Telecommunications"
Advantages of LTE
1. LTE facilitates the current applications to perform on better speed as well as for the new mobile applications
2. LTE decrease the traffic of communication in term of sending data.
3. LTE allows more users to use the same frequency that result in increasing of Mobile Broadband users.
4. LTE separates frequencies into different channel in order to protect the disturbance of each channel; the solution was called “Orthogonal”.
5. LTE offers faster data rate transfer as compare to existing 3G network equipments by using radio waves over the same bandwidth.
6. LTE supports more data capacity because it focuses on VoIP(Voice Over Internet Protocol).
7. LTE allows wireless broadband providers to transition to this new technology without rebuilding their entire networks from the ground up.
8. LTE can also support voice and Short Message Service (SMS) text messaging using existing networks via Generic Access (VoLGA).
Disadvantages of LTE
1. The start-up costs of service providers and consumers for equipment upgrades are too high; new equipments will be needed to be installed.
2. LTE technology need to use additional antennas at network base stations for data transmission. As a result to the network upgrades users need to buy new cell phones to make use of new network infrastructure.

Features of LTE 1. It peaks download rates of 326.4 Mbit/s and upload rates of 86.4 Mbit/s. It uses 4x4 antennas in case of download rates but single antenna for upload rates. 2. Peak data rates are supported by five different terminal classes that are defined from a voice centric class up to a high end terminal and they will enable the terminals to process 20 MHz bandwidth. 3. At low cost it provides much better services. 4. It is Flexible in use of existing as well as new frequency Band. 5. It has open interface and has simple structural design. 6. It also allows evenhanded terminal power consumption.

Advantages of wimax:
 Wide-Area Wireless Network:
1.  Provides mobility to user with access to the Internet.
2. Convenient to user because of the ubiquitous connection.
3. High speed radio wave data transmission (up to 10Mb).
4. Does not require telephone line.
5. Designed with better quality of service (QoS)
6. N
on-line of sight connection.
7.
Provides wide area connectivity up to 50km radius from transmission tower.

Disadvantages of WiMAX:

1. New technology which is still unstable, frequent disconnections.
2. Many interference disruption/slows down connection (weather, cordless phone, microwave oven)
3. Connection weakens when distance increases, away from transmission tower.
4.
Wireless technology more prone to hackers
                                                                             Features of WiMAX Technology
Wimax Features
WiMAX is a great invention in wireless technology providing 30 miles broadband access to mobile users. Wimax technology based on IEEE 802.16 standard and it is a telecommunication protocol offering full access to mobile internet across cities and countries with a wide range of devices. Wimax technology has salient features as described below.
WiMAX support multipath
WiMAX technology is offering OFDM-based physical layer which is based on orthogonal frequency distribution. The WiMAX technology is providing confrontation to multipath. Due to its good architecture it allows the user to operate in NLOS condition. Now WiMAX is familiar as a technique of multi path for wireless network.
WiMAX broadband access
WiMAX technology is offering very high speed broadband access to mobile internet. When you are using 20MHz the data rate can be high up to 74Mbps. Generally 10MHz wit the TDD scheme provides 3:1 up and down link ratio. WiMAX providing very good signals therefore higher data rate can be achieved with multiple antennas. Antennas are used for beam forming, space time coding etc.
WiMAX offer high speed data rate
Another feature of Wimax Technology is high speed data rate. The scalable architecture of physical layer is offering high speed data rate. Wimax technology is providing easily scaling of data with possible bandwidth of channel. If the bandwidth of channels may from 1.25MHz to 10MHz then a system can use 128, 512, 048 bit FFTs which provide dynamically roaming across numerous network having dissimilar bandwidth.
Wimax offer modulation and error correction
The use WiMAX technology is increasing rapidly because it supports lots of modulation and error correction facility to user. It also allowing a user that they could change the scheme according to channel condition. (AMC) Adaptive Modulation and Coding is a valuable method to exploit throughput in a varying channel.
WiMAX support reliability of data
Automatic retransmission of data supported by Wimax at data link layer for link is a great feature. It is not only improving reliability but also enabled ARQ which necessitate each broadcast packet to be recognized by the receiver, and if any unacknowledged data packets are unspecified to be misplaced and are retransmitted.
WiMAX support TDD and FDD
Another significant feature of WiMAX technology is that it supports Time Division Duplexing (TDD) and Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD). They both are offering low cost system accomplishment.
WiMAX TDM scheme
The WiMAX technology holds all system therefore any data may be in form of uplink or downlink checked by scheduler from the base station. The total capacity shared between several users according to their demand. And it is done by WiMAX TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) scheme.
WiMAX MAC layer
The architecture of WiMAX technology based on MAC layer which is a connection oriented layer. Through MAC layer a use can perform a variety of functions such as various type of application including multimedia and voice can be used. It also supports best efforts for data traffic as bit, real time, traffic flaws etc. The aim to design WiMAX technology is to facilitate large number of user with a variety of connection per terminal.
WiMAX strong encryption
WiMAX technology also facilitates the user with strong encryption. By using AES (Advanced Encryption standard) a user can get strong privacy and administration. The EAP protocol offer flexible substantiation architecture which make enable a user to get access to username, password, certificates, and smart card.
WiMAX mobility
The basic and most important feature of WiMAX technology is to support mobility applications as VoIP. The power saving mechanism of WiMAX technology is used to extend the battery life of handheld devices. It supports mobile applications including channel estimation, sub channelization, power control etc.
